How to Force Enable Dark Mode for Chrome on Windows 10

Because dark mode only works for Google Chrome version 74 and up.

Open Google Chrome and go to the top-right corner.

Where you see these three buttons that represent the menu options.

Click it and hover the cursor where it says Help.

Now click where it says about Google Chrome.

Now you will see which version of Google Chrome you are running.

If it needs to be updated, Google Chrome will automatically update itself.

Once you are done, close all windows of Google Chrome.

Now let us activate dark mode for Google Chrome.

But, let's try doing it the regular way first.

This means enabling dark mode on Windows 10, which will automatically enable it for Google Chrome as well.

Then we will see how to force Google Chrome to always be in dark mode.

This is very important because there is an important setting on Windows people often forget about.

This allows Google Chrome to truly be in dark mode,

Because most of the time, Google Chrome is only partially in dark mode when people enable it on Windows 10.

But, there are these little settings people often forget.

This is also important when you want to force Google Chrome to work in dark mode.

To enable dark mode on Windows 10, click the Start button and then type color settings in the search field.

Select Color settings from the search results.

And now you will see many different color settings.

Go to where it says, "choose your default app mode" and then select dark.

Another option to consider to fully benefit from dark mode is this one here.

Under where it says show accent on the following surfaces,

Deselect the box that says Title bars and window borders.

This is it! This is the option I was talking about that can make such a big difference.

When you do this, Google Chrome will be fully in dark mode,

especially the top part of the windows.

Let's see how this works. Let's see the differences.

I'm putting Google Chrome and the color settings app side by side, so you can clearly see the difference.

This is Google Chrome on the left and the color settings app on the right.

As you can see, when I enable dark mode, Google Chrome automatically is in dark mode too.

Remember to pay attention to this option.

Again where it says show accent on the following surfaces,

Deselect title bars and window borders.

As you can see, when this is selected, Google Chrome is not fully in dark mode.

The top parts still have accent colors.

And when you deselect this, Google Chrome is now fully dark.

But, each time, when we put the color settings app back to light color, Google Chrome is back to the light color as well.

And you may not necessarily want that

You may prefer the light option for Windows, but you want Google Chrome to always be in dark mode.

Let's see how to force Google Chrome to always be in dark mode.

Happily! Doing that is simple.

To do this, click the Start button and type Google Chrome in the search field.

From the search results, right-click Google Chrome and select the open file location.

This will take you to the original shortcut file of Google Chrome.

You can make this file the dark mode version of Google Chrome that will always be in dark mode.

But, if you have other shortcuts to Google Chrome

in other places such as the desktop or start menu, they will not work.

Only the specific shortcut you see where will work, which you can find by typing Google Chrome in the search field.

If you want, you can send a copy of this file to the desktop, pin it to the start menu, and that will work.

I am going to do something similar. I am making a copy of this and putting it in a separate folder.

Let me right-click and copy.

I am going to transfer that to that specific folder.

Now each time I go to that folder, I know it has the dark mode version of Google Chrome.

Now let's force this to always work in dark mode.

Right-click this shortcut file of Google Chrome and select properties.

Go to the shortcut tab and then go to the field that says target.

Inside the target text field type this at the end: --force-dark-mode

Don't worry. This is in the description of this video on YouTube.

So you can copy it this text from over there and then put it in the target text field.

And then you will be ready.

After doing all of this, click apply and then click ok.

Now, this specific shortcut of Google Chrome will always work in dark mode regardless of the situation.

As you can see, I am now using the regular theme on Windows 10.

And look! When I open Google Chrome, it is now in dark mode.

Even though Windows 10 is in the light color mode.

So regardless of the situation, you can always use Google Chrome in dark mode.
